Michael is currently Junior Group Leader and Attending Physician at the Department of Nephrology and Medical Intensive Care at Charite in Berlin, Germany. He studied Medicine at the Universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg, British Columbia, University College London, Oxford, and Berne. He obtained his MD in experimental lab work on systemic sclerosis with Professor Jorg Distler, MD. In 2012 he went to Hannover Medical School for residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. Here, he also pursued a post-doctoral fellowship with Professor Hermann Haller, MD in experimental peritoneal dialysis. In 2019 he joined the lab of Professor Katalin Susztak, MD PhD at UPenn where he studied single-cell transcriptomic responses in acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, before starting his own lab at Charite under Professor Kai-Uwe Eckardt, MD in 2022. His current research focuses on mechanisms of adaptation, recovery, and repair in AKI, AKD, and transition to CKD. He currently is an Else Kroner-Fresenius Memorial Fellow, a Fellow of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charite Clinician Scientist Program, a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN), an Ex-Editorial Fellow at the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), and a Dr. Werner Jackstadt Research Award holder. In 2025 he was awarded an ERC Starting Grant (SINGuLAR) to investigate kidney regeneration.
