Professor Martin Wilkie

Consultant and Honorary Professor of Nephrology

Consultant nephrologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from August 1995; Editor in Chief Peritoneal Dialysis International 2013-2020; Chief Investigator UK Catheter study (peritoneal dialysis access), Clinical Lead for the Health Foundation funded Shared Haemodialysis Care Program from 2010; Strategic lead Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network until March 2025. which included a particular focus on increasing research participation for people from underserved groups.

Martin has worked in the home dialysis service at Sheffield since 1995 including both home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis

He has a strong educational background – including teaching internationally on peritoneal dialysis (he has chaired and has lectured at widely at international meetings).  His research interesting include peritoneal dialysis access and patient decision making (contributor to the Yorkshire Dialysis Decision Aid).  He has  an interest in quality improvement and in 2020 published the report “Kidney Services Improving at Scale”.  He has chaired and contributed to guideline development including the 2019 International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis guideline on Peritoneal Access.  He was the co-chair for the ISPD/EuroPD Conference March 2021 and  co-chair of the KDIGO Home Dialysis controversies conference May 2021.  He has a particular interest in steady concentration peritoneal dialysis and advises Triomed on the development of the Carry Life Ultrafiltration Device.
