I am a professional Social Worker, graduated from the University of the Western Cape, and currently serving as the first Renal Youth Worker in Africa. Based at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, I provide psychosocial support to adolescents and young adults living with chronic kidney disease. My focus is on bridging the gap between paediatric and adult nephrology services, ensuring smoother transitions and continuity of care. Although only a few months into this pioneering role, I have a strong interest in addressing the educational and developmental barriers faced by renal patients. Many young people struggle to complete school due to frequent hospitalisation and treatment demands, creating a domino effect that limits future opportunities and often leaves them dependent on grants. This challenge has inspired me to explore ways of helping renal youth remain connected to learning and be equipped for greater independence.

Equally, I am passionate about promoting resilience and independence, equipping young people to manage life stressors alongside chronic illness. Through life-skills interventions, adherence support, and peer engagement, I empower them to take responsibility for their health and build the confidence needed to thrive.

My vision is to strengthen patient-centred care and create opportunities that enable renal youth to reach their full potential.
