Dr Vermeulen completed her initial and postgraduate medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand and after completion of her nephrology training in 2012 relocated to the Garden Route.

Since 2013 she manages the renal unit at the public sector George Regional Hospital (GRH) – initially as sole nephrologist in the Southern Cape and is still responsible for clinical care provision for all public sector nephrology patients in the district.

From 2024 she was appointed as the head of Internal Medicine and Nephrology at GRH.

Dr Vermeulen holds an associated lecturer position at the University of Cape Town and acts as an examiner for the CMSA Nephrology exams.
